Why does Mining Indaba charge VAT if it is not a South African corporation? Mining Indaba, LLC is not a South African corporation, however, SARS is very clear on the fact that VAT is destination based, which means that the consumption of goods and services in South Africa is taxed. VAT is therefore paid on the supply of goods or services in South Africa as well as on the importation of goods or services into South Africa.  As a result, Mining Indaba, LLC is eligible primarily based on the fact that the services provided are consumed in South Africa regardless of our resident status.

We are then mandated by law to assess VAT on all services that will be consumed within South Africa (regardless of our customer’s country of origin). If you are a VAT or South African registered enterprise, you can claim back VAT.

Why do I or my company have to pay VAT? We are exempt from income tax and/or VAT.  All show participants are subject to VAT regardless of income tax status. According to section 12 of the Value Added Tax Act only supplies that fall within the ambit of section 12 will be exempt from VAT.  Since the conference itself does not fall within the ambit of section 12 (outline of qualifying items under SARS on page 4 of the attached) of the Value Added Tax Act, there is no basis upon which your group can claim that it is exempt from VAT.

Mining Indaba, LLC is VAT eligible per the South African Revenue Service.  As a result, we must charge VAT on all supplies.  It is our understanding that your group can then claim a credit in the amount of the VAT you payout against your VAT due to SARS, however, we recommend discussing that in depth with your tax professional.

If I registered early and I pay later do I still get the early bird rate? No. Early bird qualification is based on the date of PAYMENT, not the date of REGISTRATION. Payments after an early bird deadline will be applied toward the next tier of fees and you will be billed for the balance.

Can I pay for my conference registration on-site?
