NEW: Final of the Innovation & Research Battlefield

In partnership with Development Partner Institute and Business For Development

  • The Mining Innovation & Research Battlefield is a platform for collaboration between the mining industry, academia, business, NGOs and young people who have a vested interest in sustainable mining for development solutions. The prize? Capital towards the winning project.

  • The challenge, however, continues to grow against a backdrop of climate change, automation, reduced global mobility, a growing ESG agenda and rising stakeholder expectations. Research and proposed solutions from outside of the sector have the potential to drive positive impact on the ground, but funding for piloting and implementation is rarely available.

  • So how can we create change? At the 2022 Indaba Innovation and Research Battlefield we're looking for innovative research proposals that offer new solutions to the challenge of developing a post-mine life economy.

Judging Panel: made up of Industry Sponsors who will create the final prize including BHP and the University of Queensland.

Participants: major universities from across the continent, innovative start-ups looking for seed capital, NGOs making a difference in mining communities.

A New Lens on State Equity Participation: Assessing Africa’s Risks and Rewards in a Changing Global Context

The World Bank and African Legal Support Facility welcome you to the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) Toolkit Launch. AMLA has developed two knowledge products (“Toolkits”) focused on proposing strategies that enable practical implementation of the Guiding Template’s provisions on (i) state equity participation and (ii) local development and community engagement. These Toolkits will provide publicly accessible information and analysis of various legal approaches to address these two important areas in inclusive mineral development. As part of the launch, AMLA will host a panel discussion to address experiences in and evolving approaches to state equity participation.
