02/05/2019 11:00 02/05/2019 12:30 DuPont Executive Forum: Reducing Operational Risk – An Imperative for the Mining Industry There is no doubt that in the last decade, the mining sector in South Africa have shown improvements in incidents and injuries trends. Key players have been able to show progress in curbing injuries through a wide range of initiatives. Nevertheless, South African mines include most of the deepest mines in the world in a challenging socio-economic and diverse cultural context. These factors result in high level of inherent risks that need to be constantly managed to protect people and bottom line. The rise in major accidents and fatalities in 2018 poses two key questions to mining operators: 1) are current operational risk management systems and practices adequate to address the day-to-day key operational risks?, and 2) how can risk reduction and safety performance improvements be effectively sustained over time? Recent accidents suggest that it is critical for mining companies to evolve their operational management processes to beyond a safety compliance mindset to one of proactive risk management in day-to-day operations, across all levels of the organization, from management down to front line. In doing so, companies stand to benefit from more effective operations, a more engaged workforce and maximized up-time. The panel will discuss how mining operations are evolving, how this has augmented risk, as well as the challenges and opportunities that companies have in improving their operational risk management systems and practices. This highly interactive session will feature best practices and case studies, and also review how new thinking in operations management and recent technological innovations can be applied to drive improvement.
