Dawid (Dawie) is a Mining Engineer in Training at Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen mine, a subsidiary of Anglo American.
He started his career as a blasting assistant and operator at Sishen mine while studying part time. After obtaining his BTech in Mining Engineering, he joined the Professionals-In-Training (PIT) pool for Kumba Iron Ore, where he worked at Sibanye Stillwater’s Kloof gold mine, Anglo American Platinum’s Tumela mine, and at Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen mine as part of the graduate programme, where he is currently in the drilling and blasting technical space.
Growing up in Kathu, he always had high regard for mining due to the value it adds to the local community. He is passionate about mining and values the difference it can make to people’s livelihoods – Living Anglo American’s purpose of “Re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives”. His mission is to fulfil this purpose and strives to continuously improve mining practices to achieve zero harm.
Dawid holds a National Diploma in Mining Engineering from the University of South Africa, a BTech in Mining Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, a Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines from the DMRE, and a Programme in Business Management from Unisa. He is an Associate at the SAIMM, a registered Candidate at the ECSA, the runner-up in the 2022 Kumba Iron Ore Professionals-In-Training Symposium, and the winner of the Anglo American Global Graduate Business Improvement Project Symposium.
