Leigh Hudson is the Southern Africa Tax lead for First Quantum Minerals, one of the world’s top 10 copper producers and one of the largest producers of copper in Africa. Leigh started her career with Deloitte and has over 15 years’ experience in international taxation and has spent time working in Europe, Asia and Africa. Leigh’s more recent experience has been focused across the Africa region as she has a particular interest in tax policy in developing countries. In her current role, she supports the First Quantum Minerals mines in Zambia, being the Kansanshi and Sentinel mines.
The amount of taxes paid by multinational corporations often appears in the media headlines – often times for the wrong reasons. What is not reported is that the mining sector is often the largest contributor of budget revenues (corporate income tax, royalties, dividends, indirect taxes, employee, and supplier taxes) in many developing countries and the largest employers. The investments and budget contributions by mining companies across Africa are a significant driver of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
