The Ministry of Minerals and Energy’s mandate: Provide leadership and overall policy direction, strategy and standards on minerals and energy sector development. Vision To be the international benchmark in the development of mineral and energy resources for national prosperity. Mission We create an enabling environment for the development of the minerals and energy sectors and provide opportunities for the sustainable socio-economic development for Botswana. The Ministry operates through the following entities: DEPARTMENTS Department of Mines (DOM): Responsible for licensing and monitoring prospecting and mining activities to ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards as required by relevant Acts and Regulations. Minerals Affairs Division (MAD): policymaking authority on all matters of mining and mineral sector development Diamond Hub (DH): The Diamond Hub facilitates the downstream diamond business establishment and monitoring of import and export of diamonds. Department of Energy (DOE): policy-making authority in all matters relating to sustainable supply of energy. Projects and Energy Development Unit (PEDU): PEDU is focused on developing and implementing larger infrastructure projects, particularly in renewable energy. It plays a key role in Botswana's efforts to transition towards a more sustainable and diversified energy future. STATE OWNED ENTITIES Botswana Power Corporation (BPC): Oversees the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Botswana. Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI): Custodian of national geoscience data and responsible for geoscience research and development. Botswana Oil Limited (BOL): Ensures secure and efficient supply of petroleum products for the country. Mineral Development Company Botswana (MDCB): Manages and develops Botswana’s present and future mining investments. Okavango Diamond Company (ODC): Markets Botswana’s rough diamonds globally through open access diamond sales. Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA): Regulates the energy sector with a focus on economic oversight and efficiency.
