Africa is widely regarded as the world's last great exploration frontier. New discoveries are seen as essential to support mining growth, industrialisation and future mineral supply. But while the industry continues to search for the next Tier 1 deposit, millions of tonnes of known resources remain undeveloped across the continent.
This debate challenges a fundamental assumption at the heart of the mining industry: is Africa's greatest obstacle a lack of discovery, or a lack of development? And should more effort be directed towards finding new deposits, or removing the barriers preventing known discoveries from becoming mines?
