Ivanplats’ Shaft #2 at the Platreef mine is taking a different approach to deep shaft construction. The shaft was first raise-bored to depth at 3.1 m in diameter and is now being widened to 10 m using the innovative slipe-and-line method.
Once complete, Shaft #2 is expected to become Africa’s largest hoisting shaft, supporting Platreef’s expansion and demonstrating how innovative shaft-sinking and engineering methods can enable the next generation of large-scale underground mines.
This session will explore the technology, construction challenges and lessons from one of South Africa’s most ambitious shaft projects.
