Ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day the Minerals Council South Africa recognises its Women in Mining 2024 Sustainability Heroes as part of its Women in Mining Programme.

The 2024 Sustainability Heroes, who were nominated by their peers, represent female trailblazers who have achieved remarkable feats in the areas of sustainability in mining in their respective organisations and in the mining industry.

They understand the principles of people, planet, purpose and profit, and they advocate for sustainability through a strong commitment to stewardship, investment in modern technologies and embrace the circular economy.
 

Meet the Minerals Council South Africa’s Women in Mining 2024 sustainability heroes

Lynne McLean, Senior Manager of Social Risk and Impact at Anglo American Platinum, has been a driving force behind the company’s commitment to creating lasting social impact. With over 20 years of in the mining sector, she has played a role in integrating social development into the company’s sustainability framework, ensuring communities benefit from strategic investments.

Thando Njoko leads the Social Performance and Socioeconomic Development function at Kumba Iron Ore, driving initiatives that create lasting value for host communities. With a background in advisory services at PwC and extensive experience in mining, she has been instrumental in shaping sustainability strategies across Anglo American Group since 2018.

Philile Ntombela is an experienced Water Strategy Specialist at Seriti Resources, where she drives sustainability initiatives within the mining industry. With a background in Environmental Sciences, her career began at Seriti Resources as a vocation student, where she contributed to projects focused on air quality management and water-related challenges in mining operations.

Daphney Tshehla, Head of Environment at Thungela, has been a driving force behind the company’s commitment to sustainable mining. With 24 years of experience in environmental management, she has played a role in integrating sustainability into Thungela’s long-term vision, ensuring that environmental considerations go beyond compliance.
