London, UK: The Mining Indaba Ministerial Symposium took place on the 3rd February 2019, bringing together a total of 110 C-level mining executives and government officials, which included among them 15 African mining and energy ministers and 36 mining company CEOs.

The Symposium is a prestigious invite-only event, now in its 7th year, and is the only African event of this magnitude to engage industry leaders. It aims to strengthen public cooperation to encourage the highest level of development planning and move the industry forward through the common interests of investment, safety and sustainability.

The Symposium featured keynote addresses given by Hon. Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources for South Africa, and H.E. Albert Muchanga, Commissioner for Trade and Industry, African Union. Other notable speakers included Mark Cutifani, CEO of Anglo American and Bold Baatar, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals at Rio Tinto.

Ministerial & CEO regional roundtables covered a variety of discussions around topics including:

• The root cause of resource nationalism
• Issues around current regimes of taxation, revenue management and transparent governance
• Good practices for designing and implementing effective fiscal regimes across regions
• The fourth industrial revolution and the wider impacts of technological innovation on communities and the workforce
• How to ensure that policies and governance frameworks change and adapt in line with corporate innovation

Participants in the roundtables agreed on the need for increased collaboration, trust and transparency between government and business, as well as finding a balance between the long-term sustainable development of the continent and short-term gains. According to the African Union Commission the event has set a strong base for potentially signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the public and private sectors at the 2020 Ministerial Symposium.
