Earlier this month Okavango Diamond Company (ODC), Botswana’s state-owned rough diamond trading arm, announced the registration of its rough diamonds on the Tracr blockchain platform.
The Tracr blockchain platform is a joint initiative by Debswana and De Beers aimed at increasing supply chain transparency.
Under the new arrangement, ODC will onboard rough stones across two key segments:
- 0.75–1.50 carats
- 2–10 carats
“By joining the Tracr platform, we are strengthening our commitment to transparency and ensuring that Botswana’s diamonds are recognized for the ethical legacy they represent,” says ODC Managing Director, Mmetla Masire. This integration enables buyers, regulators, and consumers to trace each diamond’s journey from extraction point to point of sale with unalterable blockchain verification.
Tracr CEO, Wesley Tucker, described the initiative as “an exciting step forward” that scales provenance efforts across the diamond sector and boosts the volume of traceable supply on the platform.
Debswana’s Managing Director, Andrew Maatla Motsomi, echoed the sentiment, framing it as a crucial tool in upholding Botswana’s reputation for provenance integrity.
ODC aims to expand material coverage on the Tracr platform throughout 2025, starting with the two designated size categories. This scalable rollout enables them to rapidly align with international buyers focused on certified origins.
