Building advantage: Financial and sovereign value capture through gold

08 Feb 2027
14:00(2 hours)

Putting Africa’s emerging gold sovereignty ambitions into direct dialogue with the realities of the global gold market, the forum will first examine how countries can capture greater financial and strategic value from gold through domestic purchasing, reserve accumulation, refining, formalisation and stronger participation from mine to market. Private-sector challengers spanning mining, refining, trading, finance and market access will then test how these strategies work in practice, where national approaches are commercially viable, and where regional scale and international partnerships remain essential. Africa is a major global gold producer, yet its gold wealth has not always translated into equivalent financial and sovereign gains. Across the continent, a new generation of gold strategies is emerging as governments and central banks seek to convert mineral wealth into deeper financial, strategic and sovereign value. The challenge now is to determine which interventions can be effectively pursued at national level, where regional scale is needed, and how Africa can retain more value across the gold chain while remaining connected to global markets.

The African Proposition:

  • How can domestic gold purchasing, refining and reserve accumulation translate mineral wealth into greater sovereign and financial value?

The market Test:

  • How far can Africa reshape the way its gold is bought, refined and traded without compromising access to the liquidity, accreditation and markets?
