Kevin Netshivhongweni is a master’s candidate in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, specialising in sustainable materials processing and circular economy applications. He holds a BSc. in Chemical Engineering with Honours and has developed expertise in hydrometallurgy, mineral processing, and resource recovery. His current research explores the extraction of calcium and magnesium from concrete waste through heap leaching, with the aim of transforming construction and demolition waste into valuable resources for mineral carbonation and industrial decarbonisation.
Through his involvement in projects within UCT’s Hydrometallurgy Research Group, Kevin has gained hands-on experience in leaching technologies, cyanidation, and mineral characterisation. His research interests include waste-to-value innovation, critical materials recovery, and sustainable process design. He is driven by a commitment to advancing low-carbon solutions in South Africa and beyond.
