Barry was appointed Vice President Operations South Africa Manganese in 2022. Prior to this he has held various management roles within South32. Barry has been with South32 since its inception, coming across from BHPBilliton during the demerger, totalling a career of 25 years with company. Barry holds a BSc in Mining Engineering, as well as an MBA. He has served as a council member of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa and is an associate of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Manganese is a critical input for the energy transition, supporting steelmaking, infrastructure and emerging battery technologies, yet rising demand is placing increasing pressure on supply chains. This session will examine whether the manganese industry is equipped to scale responsibly, exploring how investment, policy and ESG expectations can be aligned to ensure the sector supports decarbonisation while delivering fair and inclusive outcomes for producing countries.
