Deputy Director General European Commission

Since 2001, Myriam Ferran has worked for the European Commission in various capacities: in the Directorate-General for Enlargement, the Directorate-General for Transport and Energy, the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, the Directorate-General for International Partnerships - as well as in the Cabinet of the European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn. She was working as a Head of Unit managing EU relationships with Iceland, Serbia and Turkey, later as a Director in charge of the Commission’s Neighbourhood and Enlargement Strategy and Turkey. Since November 2021 she is appointed as Deputy Director-General in DG INTPA in charge of three geographical Directorates. Prior to joining the Commission in 2001, she held various positions in the French government.

Italy–Africa: Partnership opportunities in critical minerals

The event “Italy–Africa: Partnership Opportunities in Critical Minerals”, will be held with the presence of Vice Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Valentino Valentini and will deepen the cooperation between Italy and Africa on critical raw materials, with a specific focus on supply‑security requirements and the Italian Government Mattei Plan, the strategic initiative for Africa aimed at fostering equal partnerships grounded in sustainable development. This event addresses the innovative Italian mineral strategy within the European CRM Act, focused on the enhancement of extraction and processing capacities in partner countries. The event will also showcase possible national and multilateral financing tools supporting investments - particularly on risk mitigation, blended finance, and project preparation. It concludes with a corporate segment on “mine‑to‑market” integration, with presentation on Italian and African best practices.

As Western geopolitics and budgets pivot away from aid, a large funding vacuum has emerged. In the short term it’s painful, but could it also catalyse stronger intra-African collaboration and investment?
