Werner Duvenhage joined Rio Tinto in 2013 as Managing Director for Rossing Uranium Limited in Namibia. In 2018, he was appointed Managing Director of Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa. By 2023, Werner’s responsibilities expanded within the Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium (RTIT) business unit, where he became Managing Director of RTIT Africa Operations. This role includes overseeing the Mutamba project, a mineral sands resource in Mozambique. Werner began his career in the South African mining sector, then moved into the fishing industry in Namibia, later returning to mining. His experience spans both major corporates and junior mining companies, such as Johannesburg Consolidated Investments (JCI), Bidvest, and Paladin Energy.

How can governments and miners build partnerships that deliver long-term value?

Minerals offer multi-generational development opportunities for the communities where they are mined, but has the balance of who carries that responsibility become too one-sided? If miners feel they shoulder too much of the development burden, will they lose interest in certain regions? Or should governments demand more value addition from industry?
