About
The increasing demand for energy-transition minerals, coupled with the geopolitical risks associated with their supply, has led to a renewed focus on mining these minerals sustainably and responsibly.
Mining is currently still emissions-intensive, with other environmental and socio-economic challenges that threaten to undermine the goals of a just energy transition, particularly in mining communities. It is therefore critical to ensure future mining is Net Zero and Just, particularly in Africa where a large portion of future supply will come from.
Adopting Net Zero mining practices will enable the mining industry to help ensure a secure and sustainable supply of critical minerals, while also contributing to a just and inclusive transition to a low-carbon African economy.
Watch Mining Indaba's first digital dialogue that will explore this topic at length.
Key focus areas included:
- Responsible (just) mining – what is it and how do we get there?
- Increased demand for energy transition metals and what this means for Africa.
- Net Zero mining – what is it and how do we get there?
