- Mining Services
The Company has operated in South Africa for over 100 years, and was founded in 1911 as the Texaco Company (South Africa) Ltd. The retail arm of the business, Caltex, was established in 1936 out of a partnership between the two parent companies (Chevron and Texaco). In 1940 the Company’s name was changed to Caltex (Africa) Ltd and then to Caltex Oil (SA) Ltd in 1964. The refinery in Milnerton, Cape Town was built in 1966, significantly increasing the company’s investments in South Africa and the Company was then converted into a private company in 1975. In 2005 a merger between Chevron and Texaco led to the formation of Chevron South Africa.
On 27 September 2018, Astron Energy entered the South African market through a majority acquisition of the former Chevron South Africa Pty (Ltd). Astron Energy currently operates the Caltex brand and products under license from Chevron.
Astron Energy has now taken the opportunity to consolidate its operations under a single, unifying brand identity. This means Astron Energy becomes the overarching brand across corporate, commercial, and retail, and will be the public face of the Company at all forecourts and other key sites. This is an important step in Astron Energy’s ambition to become the biggest fuel brand in South Africa.
The existing network of over 850 Caltex service stations in South Africa and Botswana will be rebranded in a phased manner as part of an exciting site refresh and upgrade initiative to be undertaken over the next few years.
