The British Geological Survey is a world-leading geological survey and global geoscience organisation, focused on public-good science for government and research to understand earth and environmental processes. We are the UK’s premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge to help society to use its natural resources responsibly, manage environmental change and be resilient to environmental hazards. The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a component research centre of UKRI through the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
The BGS carries out research in strategically important areas including energy and natural resources, vulnerability to environmental change and hazards, and earth system science, often in collaboration with the national and international scientific academic community. In this way the BGS maintains and develops understanding of earth sciences to improve policy making, enhance national wealth and reduce risk.
The BGS undertakes surveying, modelling, research and environmental and geological monitoring to deliver UK science objectives. BGS works internationally playing an important role in building geological infrastructure and capacity in developing countries.
The BGS works for both the public and private sectors and employs around 600 staff. We are a leading provider of international applied geoscience services, offering experience and expertise in geothematic mapping, geoscience information systems, mineral and energy resources, marine and coastal geology, environmental management, geohazards, hydrogeology, geophysics and engineering geology. The BGS capability is supported by state-of-the-art analytical, geo-technical and geochronological laboratories. In addition to a wide range of geoscience expertise within BGS, we have well-established links with independent experts, commercial consultants, universities and private sector organisations that can provide additional relevant expertise.
