The Cornwall Mining Alliance (CMA) serves as a central hub to highlight Cornwall's rich and diverse mining expertise. With a mining legacy that stretches back to the Bronze Age, Cornwall has long been a global pioneer in mining and quarrying. This heritage has established Cornwall as a center for geological research and mining innovation, exemplified by the establishment of the Camborne School of Mines in 1888, now part of the University of Exeter.
Thanks to Cornwall's unique geology, the region is endowed with significant resources of critical minerals, including tin, tungsten, lithium, but also copper — materials essential for the modern energy transition and technological advancement. The region is also exploring its potential for renewable energy production, particularly through geothermal power and heat generation.
In addition to its metalliferous mining history, Cornwall has been a leading producer of China Clay for over 200 years, exporting this valuable resource worldwide. This sustained industrial activity has fostered a concentration of specialist knowledge and technical skills, making Cornwall a unique center of mining expertise.
