Founded in 1851, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) stands as one of the world's oldest survey organizations. Its rich history mirrors the development of infrastructure and industries in India. Over the years, GSI has evolved and diversified for execution of various geo-scientific activities leading to significant contribution in the field of geo-science.
GSI operates under five core missions, each serving a distinct purpose: (i) Mission-I (Ground, aerial, and marine surveys): Undertaking comprehensive surveys for baseline geo-scientific data generation, (ii) Mission-II (Natural Resource Assessments & minerals, coal & lignite augmentation): Evaluating and enhancing natural resources, (iii) Mission-III (Information and dissemination): Disseminating geoscientific information, (iv) Mission-IV (Fundamental and Multi- disciplinary Geoscience research): Engaging in fundamental research and public good geoscience, (v) Mission-V (Training and capacity building): Facilitating training initiatives.
Annually, GSI sets targets and formulates field season programmes across its missions, aligning with government policies, state/central organization needs, and geological feasibility.
GSI makes significant contributions to geoscience, mineral resource assessment, fundamental research & public good geoscience and capacity building, aligning with its rich legacy and commitment for sustainable development of the country.
