The University of Leicester is a research and teaching institution specialising in applied research to the minerals industry within its Centre for Sustainable Resource Extraction (CSRE). We carry out research that will ensure a sustainable and secure supply of Earth resources to society, whilst minimising the environmental footprint and maximising socio-economic benefit.

The CSRE is engaged in a range of UK-African and global partnerships focussing on improving efficiencies in the exploration industry through research that aims to better define mineral systems, particularly in the search for battery/critical metals; and improvements in mineral processing by commercialising novel and environmentally friendly alternatives to costly, energy intensive techniques.

Current and recent industry partners include Anglo American (South Africa), BHP (global), Mabiza Resources (Zambia), First Quantum Minerals (Zambia) Ero Copper (Brazil), and the UK government (Natural Environment Research Council).

We aim to help industry improve efficiency and success from early exploration, through mining to processing and environmental rehabilitation through the application of field and laboratory research, partnerships with local government organisations such as Geological Surveys and Ministries, as well as local Universities and academic organisations. We provide strong UK-Africa links and benefits to students, industry, and the socio-economic and environmental aspects within the countries we work.
