Gemma James (Head, Biodiversity and Nature) is the lead for biodiversity and nature programmes, supporting clients to deliver nature-led engagement, research and intervention programmes. She manages the secretariat for the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030. Previously, Gemma was Head of Environmental Issues at the PRI where, she was responsible for overseeing investor initiatives, investment research and engagement on environmental themes including plastics, biodiversity, deforestation, methane, fracking and water. Prior to PRI, Gemma worked with ICMM on environmental issues, coordinating the ICMM Water Working Group and developing ICMM’s water stewardship framework.

The Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 is a collaborative investor-led initiative seeking to define a vision for a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector overall by 2030, and to develop a consensus about the role of finance in realising this vision. The Commission is consulting with stakeholders on one of its seven workstreams: ‘Historic legacies addressed and positive legacies for current operations created’.
The Commission will seek input on the definition of legacy and the framing of the overall topic. Participants will then be invited to share their inputs and reflections which will inform the future work of the Commission.
