PhD Candidate University of Venda
Ramphabana Khethani Tom is an emerging geoscientist and candidate scientist with over two years of professional experience, specializing in exploration and resource modeling within the mining and environmental sectors. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Geology at the University of Venda, where his research is focused on developing natural rock fibre to be integrated with construction materials for underground mine support. His work aims to contribute innovative solutions to enhance safety and sustainability in mining operations, particularly in underground environments.
Ramphabana holds an MSc in Environmental Geochemistry, which he completed at the University of Venda, where he conducted an in-depth study on coal and the potential for acid mine water generation in the Waterberg Coalfield. This research provided him with a strong foundation in environmental risk assessment and mitigation strategies for mining activities. Additionally, his BSc Honours degree, awarded with cum laude, focused on stabilizing gold mine tailings using hyperaccumulator plants, highlighting his commitment to environmentally responsible mining practices. His academic and practical experiences position him as a knowledgeable and skilled professional, dedicated to advancing sustainable practices within the mining industry.
2025 Agenda Sessions
The big question - How Africa can develop globally competitive infrastructure platform
- As the continent looks to turbocharge economic development and mining activities, what does the current infrastructure deficit look like across Africa? Where is the critical access needed?
- How is infrastructure funding being attracted, and what are the funding mechanisms available to develop new infrastructure requirements?
- How can the maximisation of propulsive local and regional economic linkages help expedite infrastructure development?
- PPPs - how are Public/Private partnerships accelerating development of African infrastructure?
