Driving sustainable investment in African Mining

Mark Bristow

President & CEO  Barrick Gold Corporation

Mark Bristow, a geologist with a PhD from the University of Natal in South Africa, established Randgold Resources and as Chief Executive, led the company’s growth into a major multinational gold mining and exploration business which was listed on the London Stock Exchange,

Over his plus 30 year career he has played a significant role in promoting sub-Saharan Africa as a business destination for the resource sector. He has pioneered the concept that for mining to be sustainable in emerging markets, the industry should focus on delivering value to all stakeholders.

Mark believed that the gold mining industry required restructuring in order to maximise the value of the orebodies, gold being a finite commodity. He began driving this plan and in 2019 lead the merger between Randgold Resources and Barrick Gold Corporation.

Mark took up the positions of president and chief executive of the new Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD) (TSX:ABX)  and restructured and restrategised the company. Within months he was the prime mover in the combination of the Nevada assets of Barrick and Newmont, creating the world’s single largest gold mining complex, Nevada Gold Mines, majority-owned and operated by Barrick.

Mark Bristow now leads an organisation with mines and projects in 18 countries, focused on long-life, high-margin gold and copper assets and containing six of the world’s Tier One gold mines.
