Martin Roberts

Regional Head of Discovery Anglo American

Martin Roberts is Regional Head of Discovery – Africa, Europe and Australasia and leads Anglo American’s mineral exploration activities in these regions. Martin is a geologist by background and completed his BSc Hon at Rhodes University in 1997 and his PhD in Volcanology and Igneous Petrology in the East African Rift at Cambridge University in 2002. Martin started with Anglo American as an undergraduate bursar in 1994. He has held early stage exploration roles in Zimbabwe and Botswana including the role of Exploration Manager for De Beers in Zimbabwe. He has also led technical and project teams in Resource Evaluation programmes at Jwaneng Mine before becoming the geology lead for Debswana in Gaborone in 2011. He then joined Anglo American’s Discovery team in London in 2017 where he worked as Lead – Technoeconomics and Discovery Portfolio Management. In 2020 he moved into his current role of Regional Head of Discovery. Martin has a strong interest in linking a deep understanding of geoscience with strategic decision making across the lifecycle of the mining value chain and is passionate about making a new major discovery.
