Mike Fraser

CEO Gold Fields

Mike Fraser joined Gold Fields as CEO on 1 January 2024. He has almost 25 years’ experience in the mining sector, working at a number of mining companies based in Australia, South Africa, Mozambique and the United Kingdom. 
Following an early career in industrial services, Mike joined the mining sector in 2001 in BHP’s human resources department. He rose through the ranks at BHP to head the Mozal Aluminium Smelter project in Mozambique in 2009 and thereafter was appointed the group’s President Human Resources, based in Melbourne. 
When BHP created South32 in 2015, Mike became President and Chief Operating Officer of its global aluminium, nickel and South African manganese and energy coal businesses. In 2022, he was appointed CEO of Chaarat Gold, an AIM-listed junior gold miner.  
Mike is South African and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA from the University of South Africa. He is based at Gold Fields’ Corporate Office in Johannesburg but travels extensively to the company’s operations in Australia, Ghana, South Africa, Peru, Chile and Canada.

Tailings: launch of the Global Tailings Management Institute

  • Key development in improving the safety of tailings facilities worldwide followning the launch of an independent, multi-stakeholder Global Tailings Management Institute.  
  • Headquartered in Africa, the institute will oversee an independent process through which tailings facilities are audited and certified against the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).  
  • The result: a major step forward is achieved in improving the safety of tailings facilities worldwide towards the goal of zero harm to people and the environment.
