Richard has over 25 years’ experience as a corporate finance adviser to companies in the Metals & Mining sector. Before joining Standard Chartered in August 2018, Richard was Regional Head of RBC Capital Markets Metals & Mining Group based in London where he spent 13 years advising clients on M&A and capital markets transactions. Prior to RBC, Richard worked for 8 years at Flemings/JPMorgan in London, Johannesburg and Hong Kong. Richard was also one of the founders of Hatch Corporate Finance in 2003. Richard has
extensive advisory experience with large to mid-cap clients including Glencore, ArcelorMittal, Barrick, First Quantum and Orion Mine Finance. Richard joined Standard Chartered in August 2018 with a mandate to build a world class advisory led sector team. Now in late 2021, Standard Chartered ranks #1 globally for battery materials M&A, # [3] globally for Mining M&A and #1 in Asia Pacific for Mining M&A. Recent transactions include the sale of Appian’s Brazilian nickel and copper assets to Sibanye Stillwater, the sale of Anglo American’s interest in Cerrejon to Glencore and the introduction of POSCO as a minority partner into
First Quantum’s Ravensthorpe nickel mine in Western Australia. In addition to leadership in M&A, Richard has developed a highly capable team fluent in energy transition and the broader ESG issues impacting the sector. Pre COP26, Standard Chartered was one of the first banks to publish a detailed white paper highlighting the pathway to Net Zero for its financed emissions in high carbon emitting sectors including metals and mining.
Prior to joining Standard Chartered, Richard worked for pioneers in the sector including RBC Capital Markets, JPMorgan/Flemings and Hatch. Richard graduated from Oxford University with a MA in PPE and is a Chartered
Accountant.
