Themba Mkhwanazi
Regional Director: Africa and Australia Anglo American
As Regional Director for Africa & Australia, Themba is responsible for ensuring safe and responsible operations, optimising performance, future options and commercial value across Africa and Australia.
Prior to starting this role in 2023, he served as CEO of Bulk Commodities, starting that role in 2021., He has also served as CEO of Kumba Iron Ore and CEO for Anglo American’s Thermal Coal business in South Africa. He is also a non-executive director of Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.
Themba joined Anglo American in 2014 and was previously managing director for Huntsman Tioxide in South Africa until 2007 when he was appointed COO of Richards Bay Minerals, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP. In 2011, he was seconded to Rio Tinto’s Australian coal business, before taking up the role of regional general manager for the Americas in 2012.
Themba is a Vice President of the Minerals Council of South Africa.
