Driving sustainable investment in African Mining

Heinrich Greeff

Principal Rock Engineer Council for Scientific & Industrial Research

Heinrich Greeff is a Principal Rock Engineer at the CSIR’s Mining Cluster, specialising in deep-level hard rock mining, geotechnical monitoring, and the development of digital technologies for underground environments. He leads several national research and innovation projects, with his portfolio extending into QAQC governance for ground support, the standardisation of testing methodologies, and the assessment of non-explosive rock-breaking technologies. Heinrich has extensive experience in seismic hazard management, preconditioning design, rock-mass characterisation, numerical modelling, and the deployment of specialised instrumentation in high-stress mining environments. He is currently completing an MSc in Applied Science (Mining) at the University of Pretoria, focusing on preconditioning blasting and its influence on rock-mass behaviour at the stope face. He is recognised for advancing multidisciplinary, technology-driven solutions that enhance safety, productivity, and decision-support across South Africa’s mining industry. Heinrich works closely with industry partners, OEMs, and international collaborators to ensure that research outputs remain operationally relevant and aligned with national strategic objectives.
