Driving sustainable investment in African Mining

Hon. Phumzile Mgcina

Deputy Minister of Mineral & Petroleum Resources Republic of South Africa

Appointed on 3 December 2024, Ms Phumzile Mgcina currently serves as the Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources in South Africa. Prior to this, she held the position of Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour from 3 July 2024 to 3 December 2024. Ms Mgcina brings a wealth of experience in the public sector, with a strong background in infrastructure transformation, political management, strategic planning, policy development, and monitoring and evaluation. She made her mark early in her career as the youngest Council Speaker of the Amajuba District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, where she was instrumental in enhancing service delivery through the implementation of the District Development Model. In addition to her government roles, Ms Mgcina holds significant leadership positions within the African National Congress (ANC). She is currently the Deputy President of the ANC Youth League and serves as the Acting ANC Regional Chairperson. Her past leadership roles include serving as ANC Regional Deputy Chairperson in 2021 and ANC Regional Deputy Secretary from 2018 to 2021.
