Social Performance & Resettlement Specialist Independent

Karien Lotter is an independent specialist in Social Performance, Strategy & Sustainability, with 20 years’ experience across mining, infrastructure and energy projects in 25+ African countries. Her work focuses on integrating social performance into strategic planning and investment decision-making, particularly in contexts involving land access, resettlement and long-term social change. Karien brings senior experience from both consulting and corporate environments. She spent seven years at Anglo American in a global role, where she led land access and resettlement governance, authored the company’s Land Access and Resettlement Standard, and advised operations and major projects across the portfolio. She has worked closely with governments, affected communities, project teams and financiers to translate international standards into practical, context-sensitive approaches.She is trained as a social scientist with a Master’s degree in Research Psychology and is currently completing advanced studies in systemic design and regeneration at ETH Zurich. Karien is known for her pragmatic, systems-based approach to managing social risk, navigating complex stakeholder environments, and strengthening long-term sustainability outcomes.
