Dr. Pontsho Twala

Director Wits Mining Institute, University of the Witwatersrand

Dr Pontsho Twala is the Director of the Wits Mining Institute and the second Black South African female to earn a PhD in Mining Engineering. She brings over a decade of experience in research, teaching, and strategic engagement within the mining sector. Her expertise spans mining sustainability and ESG issues, mineral beneficiation, skills development, and policy analysis, with a strong focus on artisanal and small-scale mining. Dr Twala previously worked at Mintek, where she led several community-focused projects. She is passionate about empowering mining communities to actively participate in the industry, fostering inclusive growth and shared value. Her work involves collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including mining companies, government departments, civil society organisations, and local communities. As Director of the Wits Mining Institute, Dr Twala champions a vision of mining as a catalyst for broad-based socio-economic development across Africa, driven by innovation, technology, sustainability, and skills development.
