British Geological Survey

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a world-leading geological survey and global geoscience organisation, focused on public-good science for government and research to understand earth and environmental processes. As the UK’s premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information, and knowledge the BGS helps society to use natural resources responsibly, manage environmental change and be resilient to environmental hazards. BGS leads the UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC) with support from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). CMIC supports the UK in securing adequate, timely and sustainable supplies of the minerals and metals it requires to transition its economy in the coming decades to net-zero emissions. The BGS has an extensive international programme comprising research, survey and monitoring, data management and dissemination, as well as major institutional strengthening programmes. Activities include: working with a number of countries to support the realisation of sustainable benefits from their natural resources, enhancing quality of life through improved access to water, food and energy, helping communities deal with natural hazards, mitigating the impacts of global environmental change and development of sustainable cities. BGS has worked extensively both directly for international governments and for many of the principal development agencies including: UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, the World Bank; the European Union; the Inter-American, African and Asian Development Banks; World Health Organisation and United Nations agencies. With a wealth of expertise working in Africa on mineral and energy resource potential, the BGS has assisted policy development, supported effective governance mechanisms and aided inward investment.
