Frontier Rare Earths is a private EU-owned company headquartered in Luxembourg that is focused on the Zandkopsdrift project. Zandkopsdrift is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and will produce magnet rare earths and battery grade manganese sulphate, two of the most critical raw materials necessary to achieve the energy transition. Zandkopsdrift is expected to be the lowest cost producer of battery grade manganese sulphate globally and the lowest cost producer of magnet rare earths outside China (net of manganese sulphate byproduct revenue credits). Work commenced on a DFS for Zandkopsdrift in Q1 2025, which is expected to be completed in early 2027 and is fully funded. Zandkopsdrift is fully permitted, with the mining right, environmental authorisation, social & labour and other permits required for the mine and process plant development in place. Proven and probable reserves at Zandkopsdrift will support production of 17ktpa of rare earths (including 4ktpa of magnet rare earths) and 100ktpa of battery grade manganese sulphate over a 45-year mine life. First production is targeted for 2029. In June 2025, Zandkopsdrift was designated as a Strategic Project by the EU under the Critical Raw Materials Act, one of only three rare earth extraction projects so designated worldwide. Stakeholders in Zandkopsdrift include the Korean Government (through Komir),the South African Government (through the Industrial Development Corporation) and the local Zandkopsdrift communities. Frontier is seeking to identify potential strategic partners, development financiers and off takers to participate in the construction and operation of the Zandkopsdrift mine and processing plant after completion of the DFS.
