Driving sustainable investment in African Mining

Aidan Davy

Co-COO ICMM

Aidan Davy joined ICMM in June 2007. As Co-COO he provides strategic support across ICMM’s programmatic work and plays a central role in strategy development and implementation. He leads ICMM’s work on mining standards (including work on the Consolidation of Mining Standards), sustainability reporting and policy engagement. He led the work to develop ICMM’s Mining Principles and formerly led ICMM's work on environmental resilience, social performance, and governance and transparency.  He also led ICMM’s work alongside UNEP and PRI to establish the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and more recently the related Global Tailings Management Institute. Aidan has over 38 years of cross-sectoral experience on sustainable development issues, working with a range of private, multi-lateral and not-for-profit organizations, including the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation in Washington DC. For the first decade of his career, Aidan primarily worked on environmental issues, within an international consulting company, a multinational manufacturing company and at the World Bank. He then shifted his focus to social responsibility and accountability issues, with a strong emphasis on the mining industry.

2026 Agenda Sessions

From risk to responsibility to results: Catalysing sector-wide action on GBV in mining

Gender-based violence (GBV) continues to pose a significant risk to the mining sector – undermining workplace safety, community trust, investor confidence, and the industry's social licence to operate. With mounting global pressure, mining companies face an urgent call to move beyond compliance and toward meaningful, accountable action.

This high-level, interactive workshop will explore the root causes, obstacles to progress, and real opportunities for industry-wide transformation. Join us to engage in honest conversation, share emerging practices, and help shape a new leadership agenda for addressing GBV across mining workplaces and communities. Join us at Mining Indaba 2026 to explore how this shift from competition to coordination can redefine mineral supply security.
