Xolile Mbonambi

Chief Director – Technical Support Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources (DMPR)

Xolile Mbonambi is currently Chief Director - Technical Support in the DMPR. His duties include development of mine health and safety policy and legislation, providing technical support to regional offices of the Inspectorate, and administration of Government Certificate of Competency in mining.  
He began his mining career in 1992, worked for Anglo American mines and later joined the Department in 2000 as an inspector of mines and progressed to Principal inspector for North-West province. Xolile also acted for a year as a Chief Inspector of Mines during 2016 and as a CEO for the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator for eighteen (18) months between 2017 to 2018. 
He holds a master’s degree in mining engineering from University of the Witwatersrand. 
Xolile has held various board positions as non-executive director at Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) and Mining Qualifications Authority. He is currently convener for state caucus and a chairperson of Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee at MHSC Board.  
His leadership acumen has greatly benefited his current role, where he is tasked with building and retaining harmonious relationships with diverse stakeholder groupings, including employees, executives and management, communities, traditional leaders, and unions in the mining industry.
